Types of academic motivation

Outer motivation is connected with some circumstances, for example, a reward, or punishment. Outer motivation can be positive: when after studying hard and receiving good grades at the end of the term a kid gets a reward. It can also be negative: when after getting poor grades he does not get what he wanted.

Inner motivation is connected with the activity itself and its importance for a person. Positive inner motivation is when a child does his or her best to study hard so that they can pass exams successfully, enter a university and eventually get their dream job. Negative inner motivation is when children understand that if they don’t study well, they will not enter good universities.
