Who invented the telephone?

Practically all modern encyclopedias say that the inventor of the phone is A. Bell. However, it’s not exactly right. Bell was the first person to patent the telephone, which happened in 1876.

The real inventor is Antonio Meucci who was born in Florence, Italy and who later moved to the USA. He became interested in transmitting signals. In 1860 he presented his invention which he called ‘Telectrophone’. However, he became seriously ill and his wife had to sell some of his devices including the telectrophone. He later tried to patent it but because he was poor, he couldn’t pay the patent office fees. He died in poverty. Only in 2002 the US Congress admitted that the telephone was invented by an Italian immigrant Antonio Meucci.
