Mary Lee Woods: The Pioneer Programmer and Computer Scientist

Mary Lee Woods, born in England in 1924, showed a keen interest in mathematics from an early age and excelled in the subject throughout her years in school. This love for math led her to pursue a career in science, and she enrolled in Birmingham University to pursue her dreams.

Upon graduation, Mary proved to be a smart and determined individual and soon secured a job in a company that developed commercial computers. Alongside her husband, she dedicated herself to computers and programming, becoming a pioneering computer scientist and programmer.

Her son, Tim Berners-Lee, would go on to discover the Internet, cementing Mary’s legacy in the technological sphere. Today, it is impossible to imagine life without the Internet, and any new technological developments are inevitably connected to the World Wide Web.
