Women inventors: The dishwashing machine

Josephine Cochrane, descendant of the pioneering John Fitch, revolutionized the world of dishwashing with her ingenious invention. Although she herself did not require a washing machine, her servants often shattered her valuable porcelain dishes. In search of a solution, she devised a mechanism – plates secured on shelves and cleansed by a cascading flow of water.

However, tragedy struck when her husband passed away and left her with overwhelming debts. Undeterred, Josephine pressed forward to complete her invention hastily. Through her determined efforts, she not only made her washing machine commercially successful by advertising in newspapers but also established her own company to sell these machines to restaurants and hotels.
