The first computer mouse

Douglas Engelbart, a pioneer in the field of human-computer interaction, can be credited with inventing the computer mouse. On December 9, 1968, the world got its first glimpse of this revolutionary device at a show of interactive devices in California.

Engelbart’s initial computer mouse was made out of wood and resembled a handmade box. Inside this unique contraption were two perpendicular wheels and a button. As the mouse moved across a surface, the wheels correspondingly rotated, allowing for the detection of movement direction and magnitude.

These precise measurements were then translated into the corresponding movement of a cursor on the computer screen, forever changing the way we interacted with computers.
