Women Inventors: The Story Behind Kevlar, the Lifesaving Material

Stephanie Kwolek, a pioneering chemist, developed the technology that led to the creation of Kevlar – a remarkable, heat-resistant, and lightweight fiber widely recognized for its use in bulletproof vests.

Despite facing gender discrimination in the 1960s at DuPont’s research laboratory, Kwolek’s perseverance and innovation led to her groundbreaking invention. Though her creation brought immense profits to the company, Kwolek did not personally benefit financially.

Following her retirement in 1986, she dedicated her time to teaching chemistry to aspiring students, leaving behind a lasting impact on the scientific community and beyond.
