Letting children control a situation is the only way to teach them to feel they are competent in decision-making and in any other areas they learn.
Children must learn to make their own decisions before they can legally do so. It’s not enough to tell them how to make the right decisions (or how to do something useful for themselves). Showing is not enough either. Children must do it themselves. They need to practice. They must experience the consequences of their choice, from being cold for choosing not to wear a jacket to failing a test because they chose not to study.
